‘Twindemic’: Europe in Jeopardy with Return of the Flu
The Index Today
The European Union has found itself in a major predicament as the Influenza virus returns to the region earlier than anticipated this year.
According to the European Center for Disease prevention and Control (ECDC), the spread of the flu virus has been increasing since the middle of December last year, giving rise to fresh concerns about a possible ‘twindemic’ as the threat of Omicron continues to loom.
Moreover, experts have identified the current flu virus to be of the H3 of the A virus strain which is known to have the most serious impact on older patients.
According to ECDC’s senior influenza expert Pasi Penttinen’s statement to Reuters, this return of the influenza virus can trigger a potential prolongation in the flu season, possibly lasting till summer. This can put additional pressure on the healthcare system which has already been facing a crisis since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
