Apple Warns Activists May Have Their iphones Hacked by State-Sponsored Attackers

On Wednesday, Apple Inc. issued alert messages to activists and researchers warning them of their iPhones being targeted. These researchers and activist have previously showed criticism towards the Thai government according to Reuters.

Prajak Kongkirati, a political scientist at Thammasat University received emails from Apple Inc with warnings. The tech giant said it believes that his apple devices had been hacked along with his icloud accounts.

The warning messages said, “If your device is compromised by a state-sponsored attacker, they may be able to remotely access your sensitive data, communications, or even the camera and microphone.” Other activists around the world also notified of such warnings. Political activist in Ghana and journalists from El Salvador reported receiving the warnings from Apple Inc. Israeli cyber firm NSO Group and OSY Technologies have been sued by Apple Inc for targeting Apple users and conducting illegal surveillance.
