Countries Urged to Re-do Climate Pledges as UK Draft Climate Deal
The Index Today
The UK released an initial draft for the COP cover decision which is geared towards strengthening climate plans for 2022. Other countries are being encouraged to also revisit their climate goals and ensure they align with the Paris Agreement temperature goal.
According to the Paris Agreement, nations can rewrite and provide updated climate plans. These plans can also provide details on phasing out coal and fossil fuels and focus on more ambitious pledges. Countries writing up new plans will be under a close watch as scientists have said that major steps must be implemented to avoid certain catastrophic disaster which is caused directly by global warming.
The COP26 participants are expected to negotiate a final text after the summit comes to a close. According to scientists, underdeveloped nations are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and must cap warming at 1.5C. The climate draft will focus on minimizing coal subsidies and phasing out the usage of fossil fuels. Not only will this help boost support for poorer nations but also increase response for tackling climate change.
