Ex-BoE Economist Andy Haldane to Lead UK Leveling Up Agenda
The Index Today
On Sunday, the government announced that Chief Economist of the Former Bank of England, Andy Haldane, has been appointed as the head of a British government taskforce which will manage regional equality.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged during his election in 2019 that he and his party will tackle all economic issues across the country and will initiate a “levelling up” agenda.
Andy Haldane is to take on his new role as a permanent secretary in the Cabinet Office which is a department at the center of government. The main aim of the department is to manage the overall implementation of the proposed policy. Haldane will join on a six-month secondment from the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Boris Johnson said in a statement, “Andy is uniquely qualified to lead our efforts to raise living standards, spread opportunity, improve our public services and restore people’s sense of pride in their communities.”
The new department is to be renamed to “the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.” It had been previously named as the Housing, Communities and local government ministry which was led by Michael Gove.
Andy Haldane told reporters, “Leveling up the UK is one of the signature challenges of our time. It has also been a personal passion throughout my professional career. I look forward to working with colleagues across the government, local and national, and with the private and voluntary sectors, to design and deliver an economy that works for every part of the UK.”
