The Index Today

On Saturday, the FBI system was hacked by unknown hackers who managed to send out thousands of emails and warnings of future cyber-attacks which may take place.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that thousands of emails were sent out from the bureau’s email account and involved a number of fake mails from an account called “ic.fbi.gov.” In a statement, the FBI said, “This is an ongoing situation and we are not able to provide any additional information at this time.”

According to Austin Berglas, head of professional services at BlueVoyant, the email system hacked was allocated for public-sending emails. This email systems allows FBI professionals and employees to send email to the public and was not used for classified documents. Austin Berglas was a former employee and special agent at the FBI Ney York cyber branch. He said, “This is not the classified system that was compromised. This is an externally facing account that is used to share and communicate unclassified information.”

The cyber-attack took place around midnight on Saturday where at least 100,000 spam massages were sent with the subject line, “Urgent: threat actor in system,” and were signed by the Homeland Security Department. The department has requested public to report any suspicious emails and activity in the future.
