India Reports over 500,000 COVID-19 Deaths even as Experts Place Real Estimates in Millions
The Index Today
India’s COVID-19 mortality rate surpassed 500,000 on Friday even as experts maintain the actual numbers to be somewhere in the millions. Underscoring the reason as inaccurate data and unaccounted deaths, they believe that many remain vulnerable still to the perils of the virus.
According to Assistant Professor Chinmay Tumbe of the Indian Institute of Management, “Our study published in the journal Science estimates 3 million Covid deaths in India until mid-2021 using three different databases.”
As per official reports, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India, which is currently battling the third wave of the pandemic as Omicron infections surge, has hit 41.95 million, surpassed only by the United States.
