Israel: Fourth Vaccine Dose May be Needed
The Index Today
Israel has started its booster shot program, vaccinating approximately 2.8 million people with a third dose so far. The country has focused on using Pfizer and BionTech vaccine and is preparing for more vaccine supply as it suspects a fourth Covid wave may be on the horizon.
Health ministry Director General Nachman Ash said in a radio interview, “we don’t know when will it happen; I hope very much that it won’t be within six month, like this time, and that the third dose will last for longer.”
Other countries planning to rollout booster shot programs include USA and the UK. The World Health Organization has requested nations to halt efforts on third shots and wait till the end of the year.
Almost 1 million Israelis have not had any vaccine doses whereas 2.7 million have had at least two shots. Booster shots have been said to reduce infection rates. The nation saw a surge in cases during the first week of September as Delta Variant spread rapidly.
However, the rate of severe cases among unvaccinated people remains higher as compared to those who have taken the vaccine. This points towards proof that vaccine doses help manage the growth of covid cases.
