Moderna CEO Announces Development of Potential Omicron Booster in Coming Weeks

The Index Today

Moderna CEO, Stephane Bancel on Tuesday announced that they could be ready to begin work on an Omicron booster shot in as early as the next few weeks.

Amid rising fears over the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, Moderna expects to develop a booster injection soon. In an interview with Swiss newspaper TagesAnzeiger, Bancel claimed that the booster “only needs minor adjustments for Omicron”.

Moderna manufactured about 700 million to 800 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021, and is expected to roll out more the coming year by increasing the monthly production of doses from 100 million to 150 million.

Bancel further said that the company’s collaboration with Swiss drug manufacturer Lonza will lead to a surge in production during early 2022, which could mean that Moderna would stock 30 million doses for the first time.
