Tesla Attracts Criticism over Xinjiang Showroom Inauguration
The Index Today
Tesla’s unveiling of its newest showroom in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang, has been met with much criticism from various American rights and trade groups on the account of the region’s contentious international image related to the violation of human rights.
In recent times, Xinjiang has attracted a lot of criticism and backlash in the international sphere over its atrocious treatment of Uyghur Muslims. According to the United Nations and other human rights organizations, over a million people comprising Uyghur Muslims and other Muslim minorities have been placed in detention camps in the region of Xinjiang.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations decried the move, criticizing Tesla for “supporting genocide”. On Tuesday, they tweeted, "Elon Musk must close Tesla’s Xinjiang showroom.”
Tesla joins the ranks of a multitude of foreign companies that have been criticized of late for expanding their operations to the Xinjiang area, amid mounting tensions between China and the West.
