The New York Times Acquires Viral Online Game Wordle

Wordle, the word game which has been making waves online of late, has been purchased by The New York Times, the company announced on Monday.

The word game, which is set to join The Times’ collection of games, was developed by Josh Wardle, a Brooklyn-based software engineer. The news media giant has reportedly bought the game for a whopping price that “in the low seven figures”.

Wordle first went live in October which has since culminated in millions of daily users. The game requires users to guess a five-letter word in six tries once a day. According to The Times, the game will “initially remain free to new and existing players” after it moves to its website.

Wardle has also assured users that he is actively negotiating with The Times to help current players retain their scores and streak data.
