Vaccine Protests: Truckers Block Key Bridge at U.S.-Canada Border
The Index Today
The vaccine protests in Canada have taken a turn for the worse as truck drivers have now blocked the Ambassador Bridge in the U.S.-Canada border, giving rise to fresh concerns over potential commercial repercussions.
The Ambassador Bridge in Ontario is a key border crossing between Canada and the U.S., responsible for about 30% of annual trade between the two countries. This makes its current obstruction even more problematic for Canada’s economy as it attempts to pick itself up after its pandemic-induced slump.
Canada’s Transport Minister Omar Alghabra commented on Tuesday, "This is really a serious cause for concern”. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also said that the White House has been monitoring the conditions at the border "very closely".
Many businesses have since come forward expressing concern over the present situation saying, "The disruption of the Ambassador Bridge is an attack on the well-being of our citizens and the businesses that employ them."
