The video game industry’s honeymoon with generative AI is over, at least among the people making the games. The Game Developers Conference’s 2026 State of the Game Industry survey, released this year and covering more than 2,300 industry professionals, found that 52 percent of respondents believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry, up sharply from 30 percent a year earlier and just 18 percent the year before that. Only 7 percent now call the impact positive, down from 13 percent in the 2025 report.
A Rapid Reversal in Sentiment
The swing is striking because AI adoption itself keeps climbing. GDC’s survey found 36 percent of game professionals are personally using generative AI tools in their jobs, and separate figures cited in the same report show roughly half of studios now use some form of generative AI in production. In other words, more developers are using the tools even as more of them sour on what those tools are doing to the craft. The backlash is sharpest among the people closest to creative work: 64 percent of visual and technical artists and 63 percent of design and narrative staff hold unfavorable views, compared with a much friendlier reception in business operations and executive ranks, where positive sentiment runs closer to 19 percent.

No case has crystallized the tension more than Krafton’s life-simulation game inZOI. Executives and business-side respondents in the GDC survey remain meaningfully more optimistic than rank-and-file creatives, arguing that generative tools free small teams to build content that once required dozens of environment artists or animators. Proponents point to indie studios producing sprawling open-world environments with a handful of people, and to tools like Resemble.ai’s Chatterbox voice model enabling zero-shot voice cloning for NPC dialogue without hiring full voice casts. For cash-strapped studios competing against AAA budgets, that efficiency argument carries real weight, even if it is exactly what worries unionizing developers.
NPCs That Talk Back — And a Market Racing Ahead
Beneath the sentiment numbers, the technology itself is advancing fast. Roughly 62 percent of new RPG and adventure games now ship with some form of AI-powered NPC behavior, according to industry trackers, up from just 8 percent in 2024, as engines like Nvidia’s ACE platform make real-time, LLM-driven dialogue commercially viable. The AI game-asset generation market alone was valued near $2.08 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach $10.73 billion by 2035. Total War developer Creative Assembly and PUBG maker Krafton are both cited as studios actively deploying these systems in live products, meaning the debate is no longer theoretical — it is shipping in games players are buying today.
